Tattoo Aftercare

Tattoo Aftercare Guide

Taking care of your tattoo is essential for proper healing, longevity, and preventing infection. Follow these instructions carefully to ensure the best results.

General Tattoo Aftercare

Leave the Bandage On

  • Your artist will cover your tattoo with a bandage or wrap. Leave it on for the recommended time (usually 2-6 hours).

  • Do not rewrap your tattoo unless directed by your artist.

Wash Gently

  • After removing the bandage, wash your tattoo gently with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap.

  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel or allow it to air dry. Avoid rubbing.

Apply a Thin Layer of Moisturizer

  • Use a fragrance-free, non-petroleum-based tattoo aftercare lotion (like Aquaphor, Hustle Butter, or a recommended tattoo balm).

  • Apply a thin layer—do not over-moisturize, as this can suffocate the tattoo.

Keep it Clean & Dry

  • Avoid excessive moisture—no swimming, hot tubs, or soaking in water for at least 2-3 weeks.

  • Showers are fine, but avoid direct water pressure on the tattoo.

Avoid Sun Exposure

  • No direct sunlight on your fresh tattoo. Once healed, always use sunscreen (SPF 30+) to prevent fading.

No Picking, Scratching, or Peeling

  • Your tattoo will itch and peel like a sunburn—this is normal. Do not scratch or pick at scabs, as it can cause patchy healing and scarring.

Wear Loose Clothing

  • Avoid tight or abrasive clothing that may rub against your tattoo.

Healthy Healing

  • Stay hydrated, maintain a healthy diet, and avoid excessive alcohol or smoking, as these can slow healing.

Additional Aftercare for Specific Tattoos

Large Tattoos (Full Sleeves, Back Pieces, etc.)

  • Healing may take longer due to size.

  • Keep the area extra moisturized and avoid sleeping on the tattooed area.

Hand, Finger & Foot Tattoos

  • These areas fade faster and are more prone to infections due to frequent use.

  • Avoid wearing tight shoes.

  • Expect frequent touch-ups over time.

White Ink & Light-Colored Tattoos

  • White and light-colored ink tends to fade faster and may heal unevenly.

  • Keep extra protected from the sun to avoid discoloration.

Rib & Torso Tattoos

  • Be cautious with tight clothing, bras, or waistbands that can cause irritation.

  • Avoid sleeping directly on the tattoo to prevent friction.

Neck & Face Tattoos

  • Avoid makeup, skincare products, or excessive sweating on the area.

  • Be mindful of hats, scarves, and pillowcases that could cause irritation.

Blackout & Heavy Saturation Tattoos

  • May require longer healing times due to the amount of ink.

  • The area may be extra sensitive and prone to peeling—moisturize regularly.

Scar Cover-Up Tattoos

  • Healing may vary depending on the scar tissue.

  • Expect longer healing times and potential touch-ups.

Signs of a Problem – When to Seek Help

Possible Infection: Extreme redness, excessive swelling, warmth, pus, or a foul odor.
Allergic Reaction: Rash, prolonged irritation, or unusual bumps.
Excessive Scabbing: Thick, oozing, or painful scabs may indicate improper healing.

If you experience severe pain, fever, or unusual symptoms, contact Seven Ink Tattoos LLC at 832-955-3969 or a healthcare provider immediately.

Healing Stages & Timeline

Week 1: Redness, swelling, oozing, and tenderness (normal).
Week 2-3: Peeling, itching, and scabbing (do not scratch!).
Week 4-6: Skin appears healed but may still feel dry or sensitive.
Fully Healed: 4-6 weeks for most tattoos (large pieces may take longer).

Healing times vary by person. Continue moisturizing and protecting your tattoo from the sun to maintain its vibrancy.
